I realize this is a couple of weeks late now but I just have to say that I’m still a bit put off by America’s Got Talent this year.

Ever since the beginning, I’ve had a thing against singers (and to a lesser extent, dancers) being on the show. Isn’t that what American Idol is for (and the various dance shows)? If they’re too young, then just wait a few more years, that gives you time to get even better. If they’re too old, then oh well. So many people out there can sing, I honestly don’t see it as a huge talent these days. When I think of America’s Got Talent, or any talent show for that matter, I want to see acts that do something that isn’t very common and that is exciting and interesting to watch.

Season 2 was the only season I believe did a great job at finding talent. How many singing impressionist ventriloquists do you see out there? Who are actually very, very good? Maybe there are others, but Terry Fator was the first and only that I’ve ever seen. Season 1 really didn’t give me much hope after that singing 11-year-old girl won, who really wasn’t that great, but season 2 managed to draw me into the show more.

Now then, onto this season. Why did Kevin Skinner win a talent show? After his last performance, the judges even stated that it wasn’t that great, but that he has heart and that’s what the show is about. What? I could have sworn the show was called America’s Got Talent, since when is it about that and why are we choosing people just because they have heart? It’s America, many people out there have heart. I bet you could find hundreds or thousands of “hicks” with heart and a good country voice. I didn’t even feel any sort of connection with him, what was so great about him? At least with Season 3 winner, Neal E. Boyd, there was more of an emotional connection. No, I’m not saying I’m glad that Neal won, because again he’s a type of singer, but at least he was 10 times better than Kevin Skinner, and he actually had talent. To be honest, I was hoping Nuttin’ But Stringz would win that year.

So who do I think should have won this year? If I had to choose out of the top 10 finalists, I would have picked either Recycled Percussion or Hairo Torres, even if I didn’t care much for Hairo’s last act, myself.  However, this choice is flawed because FIVE out of the top 10, that’s 50%, were singing acts. If America would stop voting all these singers through, we would of definitely had more of a range of talent to choose from. I’ll just name one act that should have been in the top 10 that wasn’t: Acrodunk.

Finally, I must say that I am very surprised that The Voices of Glory came in fifth. I expected them to come in second or third. If a singing act HAD to win, like it did, I wish it would have been them. The little girl in the group had way more talent than Kevin and all the chickens he ever caught combined. Honestly, I don’t see him becoming big at all. He’ll take his million dollars and move on with his life, maybe with some comedy thrown in a la the Beverly Hillbillies. I mean come on, how many acts other than Terry Fator do we actually hear about anymore? Terry has performed on both Season 3 and 4 now after winning Season 2. What happened to Bianca Ryan? Where is Neal E. Boyd? Sure, they are putting out albums, but I haven’t actually heard them mentioned once yet since winning, and they never came back to perform on the show and get extra praise like Terry did.

Enjoy your new life I suppose, Kevin. Here’s hoping Season 5 gets talent, though I highly doubt it will happen with the producers running the show.

Well if you want someone to get through just vote for them. And if someone doesn’t blame America for not voting for them. :[

That’s the thing though. America appears to be full of people who can be easily persuaded by the producers of the show and only go for the sad cases and seem to think everything is American Idol.
